There are lots of different video formats available these days for personal entertainment. But the hard truth is that a single device (phones, tablets, media player) can't recognize all of these formats, you may get an error when you try to drop a video file into that device for playback. In today's discussion, we'll talk about how to convert MP4 to MPEG format, no matter what operating systems you're running, Mac or Windows.

What're MP4 and MPEG (MPEG-1, MPEG-2)

MP4 is short for MPEG-4 Part 14; it is a file extension standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG); it can contain high-quality, highly compressed digital video. The MP4 container often uses h.264 or mpeg-4 to code data and holds AAC or AC3 audio. The MP4 is one of the most popular container formats accepted by online web and offline devices.

Both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 are standard for lossy compression of video and audio, they usually have .mpeg or .mpg as file extension. While MPEG-1 provides a video resolution of 352-by-240 at 30 fps, MPEG-2 can encode video in 720x480 and 1280x720 at 60 fps. In today's digital field, the mpeg-2 still gains wide usage.

This article exemplifies how to convert MP4 file to an mpeg format for Mac system using the converter. In addition to the MPEG format, the software accepts a wide variety of output video file formats, such as MP4 to AVI Mac, for example.

Stage 1 – Install the software and fire up it

Double-click on the installation package icon once the software has downloaded. Follow the prompts to install the program onto your Mac.

Launch it, you will see the main screen where comes with a simple text-based toolbar.

Stage 2 – Import MP4s

Open the folder where holds MP4s you want to convert to MPEG, drag them and drop into the program.

Alternatively, go to the toolbar and click "Add File" button, this will bring up a file-browser window, then navigator to the folder and select your desire mp4 files.

Once you have mp4 files loaded, you should see a window similar to the one below.

Stage 3 – choose the MPEG-2 (or mpeg-1 if you wish) format to save the video as

To save the output videos in .mpg (.mpeg) format, click the "Profile" button, this will open a drop down menu with format choosing options.

In the format tab, users could easily choose the one that meets personal preference. For this article, we simply pick "MPEG-2 Video" as the export format file (we had covered a tutorial about how to convert files from .mp4 to .mov for Mac here).

Stage 3.1 – Tweak output settings

If you are an experienced user, you can manually set the output parameters to control the quality of output by clicking the "Settings" to the right side of "Profile". You'll then see the window like this.

Here you can decide how you fine-tune the video & audio parameters. Personally, I like to keep things as simple as possible - leave all of settings as they are, as the defaults are good enough.

Stage 3.2 – Take preset profile instead

In category list, you will find a group of profiles labelled with device icon. This Mac MP4 to MPEG converter provides output profiles for a host of different devices that you intend to play the video on, such as iPhone (6s/plus/6/5s/5/4), iPad, iPod, PS4, Surface and other phones, tablets and game consoles.

What you need to is just choose the preset from there and everything will be optimized automatically.

Stage 4 – Begin conversion

Once stages above are confirmed and you're happy with the configuration, you will need to do to proceed is click the "Destination" button, a small window pops up asking you set the destination for the result files. After that, click the blue "Convert" button at the bottom right corner of interface to begin the actually converting from MP4 to MPEG on Mac OS X.

This software can make full use of your Mac's power to boost speeds, the MP4 to MPEG conversion will complete in a while.
